On my trip to Cartagena, Colombia I had to make sure I stopped by this amazing coffee shop. Doing a bit of research before taking my trip I found out about this coffee shop that looked like something created out of a laboratory but held such authenticity that I had to check it out. I made my way to Cafe Del Mural owned by David Arzayus which is located in the Getsamni neighborhood. While walking towards Café del Mural you can feel the neighborhood in many ways and almost feels like the buildings, the paintings, and overall nature is speaking to you in a different but gratifying language.
Café del Mural is almost hidden or even sandwiched between local establishments but it's the beautiful blue gate that let's you know you've arrived. You can smell the coffee roasting as you approach and just outside you'll see patrons enjoying their specially made coffee. The first meetup I had was with David to speak to him about what I do and to just properly meet. Quickly I saw what makes David but more importantly Café del Mural so popular. Coming into Café del Mural you are greeted by someone sitting right outside of the cafe which almost seems like something out of a movie in which they usher you inside of the cafe. From the moment you step inside you are greeted by a bevy of items on the wall that range from vintage products such as type writers to paintings. Within 10 seconds I knew that I was within an establishment like no other.
I kept telling myself and eventually everyone in the cafe that there simply is not an establishment like this in the United States never-mind Boston where I live. I took a seat after perusing the shop for quite some time due to me being completely in awe. I had a coffee prepared for me by an amazing barista whose name is Gabby. She walked me through the very thorough process of making each coffee drink and the extensive amount of knowledge each barista must know in order to work there. While soaking in the atmosphere I notice David is pacing back and forth throughout the cafe while I speak with Gabby. At first I'm worried something is wrong and than I immediately realized he was doing his absolute best to ensure the quality is all the way up to par within each of the patrons drinks.
On that day it was very special as I got great insight into the importance of coffee as well as what really makes David tick. I left that day with such great insight and we agreed that I would come back a couple days later to have a full conversation.
