A Conversation With Tomu DJ

When you listen to Tomu Dj's music it feels like you're transported to another planet - maybe Saturn, maybe Jupiter. Wherever it is it doesn't feel like it's anywhere near where we currently live and primarily what immediately attracted me to her music.

Like most artist when we find their music and look them up to find out more about them I did the same with Tomu DJ. After listening to Tomu's music it's easy to see she has a great knack for creating amazing melodies. The synth's that groove through each song feel effortless (in a great way) and feels like as though you're traveling in a world of its own. Taking elements of Juke, Pop, Chicago dance, and electronic and blending them together with a sprinkle of Tomu's own touch gives you an idea of what Tomu delivers. I asked Tomu in our conversation if she ever is asked about her approach to making music in which she says some people think she's making very simple music with simple melodies and some people believe her music is genre bending - a very wide spectrum that is hard to come by these days.

You might listen to one song and think it came from the hands of a veteran who's been in the industry for years and listen to another song that has you impressed with the little amount of time Tomu has been making music. Song's like Memory Card off her album Ambient 2 released in 2021 on Side Chick Records feels like a relaxed build up of a "everything's alright... just trust and embrace the process" feeling and approach. That song very much feels like an adaptation of life itself where we are brought into the world and it's a slow build up of all the many things happening in life itself. A few roller coasters where it speeds up and then the feeling of "okay finally things are relaxed and not as stressful" but then there's another roller coaster. And then relaxation again.

'Grabba'

The first song off the Collaboration EP with kimdollars1 called 'Luv and Vibes' feels just like the album title. The feeling of hearing the first song off of a project and it greatly depicts the album title always feels chillingly complete. A somewhat haunting melody that's incredibly catchy and feels like someone giving you a hug while dancing but through your ears.

'Sunsets'

The fifth song off her latest album Half Moon Bay features a beautiful melody that's reminiscent of my time in London going to parties in Hackney and Shoreditch. Blessingsnore who I also got to speak to in conversation is also sprinkled throughout the song as well.

I met up with Tomu at her Boiler Room debut in Boston to speak with her and gain slightly more insight into her career. After she finished up her set she got increasingly hungry in which I suggested we grab some Chinese food at Teriyaki House (a consistent spot for my late night cravings). From there we eat and talk a bit about what's going on in her life with a cameo from Blessingsnore - before she rushes to catch a bus to NYC.
